Second Language
It is almost Sunday and I am still writing my second blog. And then I thought why my laptop doesn’t know my language. That is Marathi. The way my mind works I think in marathi and brain translates in english. Even for Hindi (my another second language) this happens.
My husband’s first language is Hindi. And all the time my brain does that. The stories of communication mishap between us range from simple comedy to major misunderstanding issues.
I was born in Maharashtra, a state of India where people speak marathi. But after marriage I came to USA ๐บ๐ธ. It was a big change for me. Language changed from marathi to English. I am communicating with people on day to day basis with my second language.
Any time I meet another person who knows marathi, I just automatically switch to marathi. It is so much easier and genuine for me to speak in marathi.
I can not express myself in my second language. It feels like artificial to me.English comes from my brain not my heart.
But every things has two sides like a coin.one good and not that much good (I don’t want to say bad).
Around the earth ๐ people have their own first language. Till now only English is the best way to communicate. That’s why I thought to write my blogs in english so that more people can understand my thoughts.
Here in California you meet a lot of people who can only speak Spanish. People are like me with my second language it’s hard to communicate with them.
I was in Italy for 3 months. I met many people who speak Italian as first language.
One day afternoon I thought to grab a bite in bakery ๐ฅฏ. I went and started talking in English. Then I found the lady didn’t know english. I was asking her for a vegetarian pizza. And it was very hard to explain. I was afraid that by mistake if she will give me meat pizza.
Then suddenly I remembered I have google translate app, I got my veggie pizza. I was more satisfied by the app than by my pizza ๐. I survived with my second language in Italy ๐ฎ๐น thanks to Google.
This is mostly a problem of adults. Kids are able to absorb multiple languages while they are growing up.
So this leads to question, what will be my son’s first language? Marathi, Hindi, English? Or all three?
Time will tell..
Nice blog.
